A radical Baptist church in Kansas known for picketing the funerals of soldiers who perished in Iraq said it intends to protest Heath Ledger's memorial service with signs claiming the actor died and is in Hell because he played a gay character in “Brokeback Mountain.”
Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka said that she and other members will picket Ledger’s United States memorial services, not those held in his native Australia.
“You cannot live in defiance of God,” she said. “He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it’s OK to be gay.”
A press release circulated by the church references Leviticus 18:22 in the Bible, which states that “thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”
“Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there,” the Westboro Baptist announcement says.
Started 1955, the Topeka, Kan.-based church has conducted over 34,000 peaceful demonstrations opposing the homosexual lifestyle, according to their Web site, GodHatesFags.com.
The organization runs various Web sites, including GodHatesAmerica.com and others that condemn lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Muslims, Roman Catholics and Jews as well as certain nationalities, according to Wikipedia.
The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the church as a hate group and the organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League, according to its Wikipedia entry.
Phelps-Roper said the church group will also be picketing the Academy Awards this year.
Both the printed release and Phelps-Roper’s verbal diatribe about Ledger were rife with homophobic slurs. She said that those who call her and other members of Westboro Baptist Church bigots must also think God is a bigot.
“God hates fags,” she said. “The wrath of God has been revealed before the eyes of this nation with the death of Heath Ledger. … This nation worships the dead almost as much as they worship their filthy sex acts. America is doomed.” _________________

I listened to her speak a few months ago on a takl radio show.
She's a hateful person. She would speak in that "friendly" tone, but what she was saying was that "you're going to hell because you're not like me".
As for peaceful demonstrations? Members of her family have assaulted people during their demonstrations several times. And no, it was not in self defense. Thankfully, people video tape these incidents, and the video consistantly shows her people spitting or hitting those people attending whatever it is that they're protesting.
On the plus side, there's groups of anti-protestors who follow these hateful people specifically to surround them in "peaceful protest" to keep them contained while whatever even this lady was trying to protest can go on in relative peace. _________________ "Addiction can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed."

Religion is a wonderful thing. It gives you the right to do anything you want, break any law or rule, and even break the rules your bible gives you as long as you do it in the name of your religion and god. Eventually she'll drink some special koolaid and head up to space. _________________

What is most frustrating for me, as a Christian, is her gross misrepresentation of Christ. Christ came as a reconciler, both between God and people and people with people. When the religious leaders of his day had banished women and gentiles from the temple he cleared it out by kicking some serious ass (Mark 11:15-17, in case you're interested)! I'm appalled at how easily people take upon themselves the mantle of a follower of Christ and just as easily throw out Christ's central teachings: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and love your neighbor as you would love yourself(Matthew 22:35-40). And the one that EVERYBODY knows: Do onto others as you would have them do onto you (Luke 6:31). _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

Some people just like to find ways to think they're better than everyone else. Of course, that doesn't get around unless you flaunt it.
I hope that those people get what they deserve in the end. I doubt it will be pleasant. |

This makes me want to go to Heath Ledgers funeral just to protest her. _________________ ~jynx~

If they give us an excuse to "defend ourselves", that would be somewhat satisfying. _________________ "Addiction can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed."

I'm sorry Mike, but I don't think God would listen to you. Better if Mary or I called in that air-strike, buddy. _________________ Conan! What is best in life?
