I pick the Holy DeeCee Empire. Marvel is great and all, but DC has vertigo and vertigo comes out with awesome stuff. _________________ ~jynx~

I was a big fan of the Marvel when I was younger, Hardcore anti-DC, from like 4th grade through my early teens. I mostly read X-men, the other X-titles and Spider-man. I stopped reading after 9th grade, none of that "I;m to old for comics" bullshite, I just didn't have the money. When I went back to comics around Senior year or so I no longer found the Marvel titles appealing. I would have given up on comics all together had I not been introduced to the vertigo and elsewords comics of DC. Later I was reintroduced to Deadpool(thanks Kick), a character I enjoyed from his appearances in X-Factor and who now had his own series. This may have rekindled my faith in Marvel had the book not got to hell immediately after I purchased a subscription (Fuck You Jimmy Pallamanti!) since then I've been pretty die hard DC. I don;t think I've read anyting new from marvel in like three years and I can't see myself doing so, except maybe to follow a writer, and even then only for a miniseries (Loeb/Sale I've been meaning to read Hulk:Grey which I've previously only skimmed. Daredevil Yellow and Spiderman:Blue were decent.) But I no longer trust Marvel for an ongoing series. Ultimate Spiderman is only Meh , even with Bendis writing. And I LOVE Bendis. But Yeah, my vote goes to DC. _________________ Mercy is the mark of a great man.

I'm kind of in comic book limbo right now. I've always followed Marvel since I was a kid because the heroes were always less "pantheon of gods" and more "stuff of legend" types (plus, the wearing of your underwear as part of your costume always struck me as really lame for DC). I'm totally with everyone on the Vertigo titles: 100 Bullets, Fables, and how could you not mention Y The Last Man - all stellar titles. But I've really enjoyed Bendis's run on Daredevil, and Staczynsky's run on Spidey (to a certain point) as well as his re-envisioning of Squadron Supreme, and let's not forget Runaways (I swear, B.K. Vaughn can do no wrong), and Punisher - my God - Ennis's Punisher is great. It's awesome for comics but really bad for my wallet that there are so many good creators out there right now. I haven't even finished reading my last batch of comics which were bought 3 months ago. 3 months! I just don't have the time anymore, so I recently told my comic book guy to stop boxing my titles for a while. Gotta get back in it, but there's just so much to fucking do. Man, I suddenly got all sad and stuff. _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

wuuuuuuuh? I think I recognized one of the titles that all the previous posts mentioned...
Recently bought a whole bunch of graphic novels for my students to read. Good recommendations from Arturo and Dave and like they both said,"If you can't get a teenager to read a comic book, you can't get them to read anything." So true, so true. For me I don't know that I can make the choice between Marvel or DC. _________________ Anyone who says money can't buy happiness doesn't have enough money. |

That might be because we hand-picked your crop of books, Joel. We got the good stuff (which Marvel does put out), its just that their good to bad ratio is nowhere near DCs. DC freaking put their entire Universe into one giant cross-over storyline which is made up of several storylines which has been going for a good year something+ and is getting ready to crank up to another storyline yet again which is itself a continuation/commemoration of a similar event 25+ years ago. At this point DC, in my opinion, just has a better overall spread of titles and authors and artists (if Marvel lost Bendis everything would be gone), especially if you include the imprints like Vertigo and Wild Storm (Planetary, The Authority). I can't even think of any Marvel imprints off the top of my head. As of like a year ago, I was buying titles pretty evenly across the board. The Ultimates, New Avengers, and Daredevil for Marvel. As well as all of the previously mentioned Vertigo titles plus the DC special event stuff on the other side. Once Marvel went into Civil War I dropped all of my Marvel books this was right around the time that DC and its imprints came out with a whole crop of awesome new titles (Seven Soldiers!) and I haven't picked up a Marvel book since, except for the occasional issue of Powers, which Marvel is dicking over anyway.
But honestly, Dark Horse has Hellboy and BPRD, so it will always be my favorite. |

"Seven Soldiers" was a fun read. "The Guardian" had that old-school Captain America feel to it.
I can recall "The Ultimates" universe and the"MAX" imprint, but MAX is a totally hit or miss thing.
Since "Powers" got brought up, thats another thing I'll give DC over Marvel, their books come out on time! Anyone know where "Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk" is? "Ultimates" slipped all the time. "Spiderman/Blackcat" took how long to come out. They even held up the entirety of the Marvel universe to give the Civil War people time to get writing. I remember picking up my stack of DC books every week and seeing my friend go home empty handed because no Marvel came out several times.
The one DC book I can think of that missed deadlines is the aforementioned "Planetary" and thats Ellis getting to it as he juggles all his other stuff. /may/ have wrapped up. _________________ <(@_@<), <(@_@)>, (>@_@)>, <(@_@)>, <(@_~)>, <(@_@)>, <(@_@<) |

Dunno I think I'd still have to go Marvel myself. Can't even give you a real reason why either. _________________ Anyone who says money can't buy happiness doesn't have enough money. |

Personally I don't really read comic books. In this case I will have to stay away from DC because it reminds me of Direct Current which reminds me of Electrical Engineering classes which then reminds me of calculus, thus reminding me of homework.... which I don't like. Thus Marvel is better _________________ Monkey of the technical type.

Direct current like the one that shocked the shit out of you when fixing your car? Or is that alternating current? _________________ Anyone who says money can't buy happiness doesn't have enough money. |

James your logic is incredible.
Liam- I didn't put Dark Horse on there because I dont know anyone that wouldn't pick Dark Horse. I mean they haven't had enough time to go into a dip (at least not that I know of) that would cause a negative reaction. And who doesn't love Hellboy or Magnolia in general.
Marvel only has their past to rely on. But if its worth it. I dont know. _________________ ~jynx~

I also love Guardian, as my spiffy avatar will show you. I felt a little naked without him at my side championing justice.
Also, the scripts for rest of Planetary are done, its just taking the artist forever to draw the books. |

In fact as of today, issue 27 of Planetary is complete. If anyone wants I can post the script for the first page of the issue, its not very long. I'm really excited about this. Planetary has also been a comic that fit snugly into my imagination and provided many hours of enjoyment and speculation.
Also, if you like Planetary, you should read Global Frequency (also by Warren Ellis). Its short, like 12 issues or something, collected into two trade paperbacks. All the stories are standalone; hell most of the characters only appear once. Its about an organization (the Global Frequency) that does what it can to protect the little people from corporate and government bullshit. Sort of...my explanations and descriptions of books and movies never make them sound as good as they are in reality. |
