I realize that many of you are familiar with it, but if you're not and you liked "The Departed" you should definitely check out "Infernal Affairs" the Hong Kong thriller "The Departed" was based on. It has it's own strengths and weaknesses as well as a pair of sequel/prequels. _________________ Mercy is the mark of a great man.

I haven't seen the subsequent movies in the series. What are they like? _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

I actually have also not seen them, I was just making people aware of their existence. I will however be watching IA2 tomorrow and 3 is the next thing in my Netfilx list so, I'll let you know as I see them. _________________ Mercy is the mark of a great man.

Part 1 is the central movie of the trilogy. Part 2 is a prequel that follows the rise of the crime lord and the police captain who found themselves in similarly opposed situations. Lots of double crosses, story development, and you get to see much of the early stuff involved in the respective moles ingratiating themselves into the "enemy camp". Part 3 is a continuation of part 1 (of which "The Departed" was a loose analog). It is a bit convoluted but it serves to tie up loose ends and balance the scales out a bit.
The fact that I saw "Infernal Affairs" first was the very reason I didn't enjoy "The Departed". TD is a well done movie with good acting (even if most of the good dialogue was a sentence for sentence lift) and if I had just seen that I would have probably loved it a lot. My problem with it is that it basically tried to cram all three movies into one (losing a lot of depth), cut out like 7/10ths of the tension and near-discoveries of IA and in return gave us Jack Nicholson as some bloody puppet they could wave around to distract us from the loss.
Not sure if this could end up like "Layla" (or whatever the spelling is) where whichever version you hear first is your absolute favorite (mine is the acoustic) and if you've seen TD you may feel like I did towards IA (just remember which came first;p) Oh, and Mark Wahlberg's character had no business even /existing/ because he got put in just to do one thing (not that it wasn't a good performance or likable), but thats Hollywood for you <shrugs> _________________ <(@_@<), <(@_@)>, (>@_@)>, <(@_@)>, <(@_~)>, <(@_@)>, <(@_@<) |

Funny thing about the Departed and Infernal Affairs. The casts of each were pretty much "A" listers. And I mean the central characters of the movies. It's weird whenever I look back at some of the Hong Kong films and realize that the people I knew when I first saw the movies were the weakest stars of the cast. Either way, I did like both the Departed and Infernal Affairs. I just distanced myself from the Departed thinking it was an "Original Film" that way I could enjoy it without criticizing what it lacked. _________________ Anyone who says money can't buy happiness doesn't have enough money. |
