[Siren] As you said, it's a lengthy process.

She has a few things going for her: She's a legal resident. She's been here long enough to take the test in Spanish. She's proficient enough in English to work.
She's been working forever. She has no criminal record what so ever, not even for jay walking or a parking ticket. And she's clever, so she can memories all the questions she'll be asked.

All she needs to do now is prep for the test and wait patiently for her test date, which should be anywhere between tomorrow and a year and a half from now. (funny how that works.)

I love cheese. And also the ability to post links (almost there)!

This thread swerved into several directions that are near and dear to the boiling rage in my patriotic heart. Sorry, Man Cannon, we are no longer a democracy - that would require a reasonably well-informed voter base. With the onset of massive, instant media, we've completed the process of transforming into a Republic.

Since I can't link yet, and because the primary rants section has yet to be implemented (I offer you guys free content and still it's not live?!), I may simply have to cut and paste my favorite rants. Prepare to enter the perimeter of wisdom ye unwashed masses!

And this all they way from page 1, but Jynxerz...

I fully agree that reverse racism is asinine, but I honestly don't feel that Caucasians possess the right to seriously complain about it. You know that awful, impotent, angry feeling you get when you're subjected to it? Magnify that multiple-fold in intensity, and imagine having to deal with it continuously in order to participate in a society wider than just your own. I've been spit on and had my life in serious threat. I've lost count of how many times I've been rolled up on by cops with no probable cause. And with us, it's often humiliating - not just a traffic stop, but forced to spread, grabbing the wall or hood while they manhandle you. And I'm a "model minority"; I can only imagine what being African-American is like.

I know I probably come off like a jerk here, and that's it's just a pet peeve of yours, but it's a pet peeve of mine to hear non-minorities complain about reverse racism Wink

Republic, yes. Completely hopeless, no. I believe we're heading toward a Roman-esque meltdown into despotism (if we're not there already) but, as you've reminded me on several occasions, I am irrepressible to a fault - sometimes to my own undoing. I remain the eternal optimist in the hope that someday, perhaps not in my lifetime but in Eli's, someone will look upon this generation and be inspired to change.

Nothing's ever entirely hopeless, but I clearly don't share your optimism. However, I endeavor to base my speech and actions on what OUGHT to be; hence my vigor matches your own, albeit from a different angle.

Dee- True life is way worse on your side of the fence. And yes I agree that complaining about reverse racism is annoying, which is why i generally don't. But when racism is brought up I feel the need to play a devils advocate and have people acknowledge that all people are victims of racism, albeit some worse then others. I have been victim to many cruelties of humanity despite the lack of my race as an excuse. Instead, I was victimized because of my accent or the fact that I hung out with known hoodlums, (Not criminals necessarily but kids that cops know because they have to talk to them a lot about their behavior). My point simply is that race is just an excuse people use to treat other people like crap, because for some reason we can't go through life feeling everyone is equal and just as worthy of a good life as everyone else.

Few incidents that amused me, starting with the most recent.
===
Me: "David speaking, how can I help you?"
Client: "Can I speak to David?"
Me: "I'm David, how can I help you?"
Client: "You're not David."
Me: "Ma'am, I'm David. What do you need?"
Client: "You're not David."
Me: (deciding to play along just because I'm bored and curious) "Okay, ma'am. Why am I not David?"
Client: "David has a very clear and pleasant voice. You sound like a Mexican".
Me: (laughing to myself) "Perhaps that is because I'm currently sick, exhausted, and, in fact, of Mexican heritage."
Client: "Can I please talk to David?"
Me: "Look, Mrs <client's name after I recognized her voice>, if this is in regards to <what I am handling for her>, then tell me. Otherwise I'm going to have to hang up on you."
Client: "... Oh, I'm SOOOO sorry, I had no idea".

***

Convo with a southern sounding lady
Me: "Is there anything else I can do for you Mrs <client>?"
Client: "No, you've been most helpfull, David. What is your last name for my records?"
Me: "David Vargas"
Client: "Vargas? Oh, that sounds Spanish! Are you Spanish?"
Me: "Close. I'm Mexican"
Client: "Oh! You don't sound Mexican at all, you assimilated very well!"

Worst part is, she was seriously trying to compliment me with no ill will.

***
And in my previous Job.

Me: "And that should do it. I thank you for your payment."
Debtor: "No, thank you for being so considerate. You're the nicest and most helpfull person I've dealt with since this mess began. I hate how the healthcare system really screws us over. I work my ass off and get screwed. Oh, but if I was hispanic I guarantee that all of this would have been taken care of. Ofcourse, we'll never know what that's like."
Me: "Yeah... I wouldn't know anything about it..."

Jynex - yeah, people suck. If we're moving onto the axiom of "total depravity of mankind", I'm 100% onboard with you. Racism is just one convenient means out of many with which to justify the perpetuation of harm on our fellows. Even if we were all of the same racial stock, we'd still have a plethora of "reasons" to fuck with each other. Heck, you have perfect cause to snarl right back at me based on gender inequalities.
Yeah, I had that same issue with hanging around with "ne'er-do-wells and wastrels" also. I wonder if I'm still listed in the LAPD gang database.

Do not mock the pod version of Dave. All of his friends have been slaving for years to get him just right, but some jacked up innate programming keeps undoing all of our best efforts. We may have to beat down the uppity-ness in him, and start over from scratch.

Oddly enough I haven't had much gender based issues. Though I'm fairly attractive I'm either too frightening or not hott enough to get sexually harassed/stunted.

But I like Dave just how he is. No need to bruise him or make him change. He's flaws are what make him so adorable and fun to play with.

If you don't mind my saying, Dave, from my memory of you, I'm surprised they didn't think you had an accent at all. Shocked It was never thick or anything, but I've always thought you had a slight accent.

*hopes she's not dug herself in a hole saying that*

OMFG, Dave. She's one of those. You're doomed. When she gets here, I'm clearing out and mocking you from a distance.

Yeah. That's called a lisp Sad I've always had that problem and even now it crops up now and then.

When I'm on the ball, I do speak clearly. At my current job I was asked if I had radio experience, if I was in sales, etc. Apparently my last job got me really used to just talking to people on the phone (plus I listen to a LOT of talk radio).

My LAST job, people were amazed when I started speaking Spanish. Apparently, everyone assumed I didn't speak any Spanish because, *gasp* I didn't have a Spanish accent (so they say, but more on that).

And that reminds me about something related to you (Siren). A few years back when the group was going out I gave you a call at your dorm to get you to join us. Your roomie answered. I don't remember her name, but she was starting to chat me up. I wasn't playing along, I was just trying to leave a message, and all it took was for her to find out I was Mexican (after I gave her my name to give the message to you). her tone went from all flirty and sweet to "Oh... 'Vargas'? I'll tell her *click*".

With all that said, yes, I do get a hint of a spanish accent now and then. It just tends to show up when I'm really, really tired.

Note: "Speaking clearly" is not the same as "Speaking concisely or coherantly". Dee, Joel, and some of the others can attest that I get flustered and flounder a bit if I don't know the subject being discussed. But when I do know what I'm talking about, it flows just fine.
