While I had hoped to give this film a good review I must say that the second part of the Russian Urban fantasy trilogy falls far short of it's predecessor. While Night Watch (no Dave, it has nothing to do with Vimes) was an interesting and original Fantasy story with intriguing characters and cool plot twists, Day watch was convoluted for the sake of being convoluted. I left the theater wondering if I had even seen a movie at all. Sadly the most interesting part of the film was the subtitles, which the film makers played with for effect, though at first I'll admit that I wasnt' sure if the effects were intentional until a character shouted "Bitch"(in russian) and the word splatted in blood against the wall. I'm glad I didn't read the book on this one because I'm sure I would have been even more upset thie film.

Grades
Night Watch: A-
Day Watch: C-

I actually heard that for Nightwatch, the guy doing the movie (producer I guess?) changed a bunch of stuff because he "hates magic and things like that." So alot of what would make a good story in the first movie even better and more solid gets cut out. Apparently The Gloom, which gets mentioned for all of like a second in the first movie is integral in the book. I assume this is catching up with them in the second movie and just making everything convoluted. I still need to see this, I'll report back when I have.

Another possibility, the fact that it is the middle of three movies means that this is where they dump as much exposition and plot points as possible with revelations and resolution in the third. Its worked that way for a few trilogies.

I actually found the first one to be somewhat lacking. Granted, it had some cool sequences - like the owl lady transformation, and the back-story elements - but overall the movie's ending left me feeling disappointed. As you can imagine, I didn't bother seeing the second one.

So does anyone have hope for this third part of the series, "Dusk Watch"?

By the way, there was a game based off "Night Watch" that was sort of an action/group rpg where you'd hop back and forth between the light world and the Gloom and fight stuff. Apparently based of the (previously) excellent "Silent Storm" engine but with a healthy dose of laziness. It was alot of cobbling weapons together from stuff and turning into animals to tear things apart....from what I heard there was much horror to it, but it was in the game design.

Here is a link to one review, though finding a video review from X-Play or something would let you hear how bad the voice action was:

Sounds like fun. I've always likes the thought of sticking stuff together to use for various purposes, hence my love of Garry's Mod. Since this isn't the games forum though, I'll shut up about that.

I thought you were going for Forum DOMINANCE! You just can't have that unless you /impose/ your will and topics on whatever thread you please.

Curses be upon thine head Pars! You have thwarted my plan for the final time. And to think that only the other day your crimes were limited to drugging people for flying ribbons everywhere...

You disgust me.
