If you could change one major historical event, what would it be?

But you set yourself up for that one Fuego.

I could be harsh now, but I rather not be.

Now, if he said that he'd go back an teach your father about the merits of Birth Control THAT would be harsh...

Panzer divisions at the Normandy landings actually getting the OK to advance on the incoming allied forces. Would make for an interesting topic I would figure. Plently of fuck ups in WWII, enough for both sides, but that one particular call would definitely have made things more interesting.

Hmmmz... Another WWII one here, though not one I'd actually like to have happened, more that I'd be interested to see what happened because it;s been a point of debate for ages.

Anyone heard of Dunkirk and the associated evacuation? Goerring (head of the Luftwaffe) demanded that his air force be allowed to bomb hell out of the soldiers on the beach, while tanks and soldiers were kept back. If that didn't happen, and the panzers did roll down onto the beach, it is widely thought that the Nazis would have massacred every person there and continued on to attack the UK. But what would happen then?

Yes, that actually happened. In Algebra 1. In the States. To me.

I think Dunkirk was a minor phenomenon brought about as a result of the overwhelming success of the panzer divisions. The main column was so far ahead of the two wings it actually lost communication with them! If the main column had stayed within reasonable range of the two screening columns, then Britain would definitely have been invaded sooner. Probably not that very day, but the timetable for Operation Sealion would have been drastically reduced.

Although martyrdom tends to firmly engrave the martyr's message into the minds of the people, I think any great man who was killed in the previous century would be a moment to change.

Kennedy and Dr. King come to mind.

I dont think I would change history but instead force people to actually learn from it. Not know that it happen but learn from it.

That is true, and I believe that most people here would agree with you. Still, it is fun to think about "what if" scenarios Smile

Jynx is speaking as if people in general are intelligent enough to actually learn from past mistakes that others make, when in fact people don't learn from mistakes they themselves have made. Sad

i would beat the crap out of the person who's idea it was to make us work for money instead of making money work for us..don't know if that would "change" anything but he/she'd damn well deserve it

That would end up being quite a few people that you'd need to beat the crap out of and you're right, it wouldn't change anything...
