As I have been asked by several people what this film was about and have up until now no idea myself I decided to do a little research and so present to you my initial findings.

First of all it is based on a book written in the 1950s by well known author Elmore Leonard. It was shortly after made into a movie of the same name staring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin and was directed by Delmer Daves. The movie was very well received and is supposed to be a old favorite among many fans of classic westerns.

The basic story begins with outlaw Ben Wade (Glenn Ford as the leader of a gang terrorizing Arizona) being captured in a small town. In order for Wade to be held accountable to the law he must first be transported to a larger town and its railroad junction where he will be loaded onto the 3:10 train to Yuma, Arizona and the state prison there. The move is arranged in secret and a local rancher and Civil War veteran by the name of Dan Evans (Van Heflin) agrees to carry out the transport in exchange for the $200 reward money he desperately needs to build a well on his drought-stricken farm.

Unfortunately for Evans (and later Wade) the gang of outlaws has somehow become aware of the plan and decides to intercept the rancher. While holed up in the other towns hotel waiting for the train to arrive the captive outlaw starts to befriend Evans and present himself as sympathetic to the farmer's plight in order to get him to accept a rather hefty bribe (a possibly fictitious $100,000) and "look the other way". The various mind games Wade caries out on him and the internal conflict between his family's desperation and his word that he would in fact put Wade on the train and deliver him to justice begin to take their toll. None of this is made easier when the band of outlaws finally arrives and it turns out that rather than get involved the town's authorities abandon Heflin's character to deal with them alone.

The movie releasing September 7th would then be a remake of this film, written/directed by the team that did "Walk the Line" (Cathy Konrad/James Mangold) and starring Russel Crowe as the outlaw Ben Wade and Christian Bale as Dan Evans, with Peter Fonda thrown in there somewhere. Part of the story mentioned for the remake is that a large part of the gang's operations was assaulting and robbing the Southern Railroad and the routes along it. I was unable, as of yet, to verify if this was a point in the original movie. If you wish to see the trailer you can do so at the Lionsgate website here

If you are interested in taking a look/possibly purchasing the original it can be found on Amazon.com here

Generally (or is it General Lee?) I don't like remakes to begin with, so it's got that going against it. Secondly, it has Russell Crowe who seems to have graduated from the Jim Carrey "Look At Me, I'm Acting" School of Acting (honestly, the only thing I didn't like about Master and Commander was Russell Crowe). I think Gladiator's success utterly ruined him. Finally, (and this is complete, unabashed, selfish ambition on my part) I want the Western genre's dry spell to go on a bit longer so that when my script hits the scene in Hollywood all the agents will go ga-ga over it.

Would you be opposed to renting the original and watching it sometime then?

As for myself, I may end up going to see this for the very fact that Westerns done well are very enjoyable affairs. I'm still waiting on a few more reviews/write ups to come in before I decide though.

I wouldn't mind seeing the original. Is it out on DVD?

Thats from my original post;p

It is most certainly available and has been for a good while. Like I said before, I'm down to watch it.

Also, as of this posting the pending remake has a 88% Fresh rating with the critics at Rotten Tomatoes. Remember that their system averages up the percentages of good vs. bad reviews from multiple print, radio, television, and online reviewers.

It could be 99% and I still wouldn't watch it in the theatre. There's a way to convince me to watch it, you just haven't figured it out yet. Wink

Don't pull the "friends" card, I'll only disrespect you more than I already do. Carrot and stick won't do the trick.

If he doesn't want to go I'm not going to "force"/coerce him. It would be nice if he did but thats okay. And I did state I'd still watch the original in his warm, manly company.
