As long as we have so many topics with the word "War" in the title I figured we might as well include the classic novel in the discussion.

Everyone knows it as "that really big book by that Russian guy about a whole lot of stuff that happened in Russia" if only vaguely.

Some of us have actually read a bit more about it, some have actually tried to read it, and a few may have gotten a good ways in. According to the old joke it makes the perfect shield because "No one gets through "War and Peace"!". But who knows, some of us may have. Feel free to share your experiences with whatever attempts you may have made with this (or any other "classic volume" you may have encountered) here in this thread.

I personally tried during Junior High as I noticed it on the shelves while tearing my way through the various novels I found in my path. I /think/ I got a good third of the way in on that attempt but don't actually remember if I stopped or kept going, only that many details seem vague and fuzzy to me... and that the next book I got my hands on was a collection of Ellery Queen mysteries...

A good copy of War and Peace is fair protection for anything up to a high powered sniper rifle.
Actually I remember when I was like ten or so, seeing a story on the news about a guy who was shot in a robbery attempt and survived because the bullet was blocked by a bible that he had in his pocket. That's awesome.

I'm not sure if you guys have seen it or not, but I often watch a show called Mythbusters. I can't remember exactly what the outcome of their test was, but if my memory serves me well they found that a bible wasn't a lot of use at stopping bullets.

Here, have a link.

"Mythbusters" is a show we know quite well over here. Glad to have you back Aranthos. Not only have you missed the usual Forum exchanges, but hours upon hours of Xbox Live madness.

Also, please to be posting/PMing how to be making with the links that aren't the entire link pasted directly but a substitute word or something. I ask Dave to send me the info since you apparently sent it to him and he hasn't yet.

Sure, just swap the ( and ) for [ and ].

(url=www.garry.tv)Garry's Blog(/url) produces a link going to www.garry.tv with the text Garry's Blog. Simple enough.

*grabs an Intern and throws them prostrate before Aranthos'es feet, to grovel before his impressive technical prowess*

Excellent, Intern. You keep groveling and expounding his virtues for another 4 office-union sanctioned minutes, then take a quick break and then its back to the filing stacks with you.

A bible can stop a .38 special or any bullet under that caliber. Get to a 9mm and above and there's no guarantee it will stop the bullet. I saw that episode, they went and tried all kinds of things, from lighters to books and even had a kevlar test I believe. The tests were setup for each rounds maximum velocity distance, i.e. the distance from the muzzle of the gun to the point where the bullet starts to slow down. Intersting check for ballistics, for me anyway =P
