This comes straight from the "Iron Man" IMDB page.

Samuel L. Jackson has indeed been apparently cast as Nicholas Fury, the director of the Marvel Universes ultra-high tech global espionage organization S.H.I.E.L.D. For those of you hazily familiar with the character you may be saying, "Wait...isn't Nick Fury...you know, white?" I would say, "Yes. Yes he is...In the /Normal/ Marvel Universe! Now gimme your tuna sammich!!*smack*"

You see kids, knowing that a lot of their properties were going kind of stale and were being limited by their own history Marvel wisely decided to give the idea of handing over the basic properties and names for their characters to new creative staff and letting them build them as they please. The result was what became known as "The Ultimate Universe". It is a whole alternate universe in which many of the characters you know exist but "not quite as you know them".

How is this relevant? Simple. Amongst that Earth's Avengers (known as "The Ultimates", who work for S.Hi.I.E.L.D.) is a Nick Fury unlike our own. He's still totally badass, but he's more "Shaft"-tastic. More than that he looks and speaks just like Samuel L. Jackson, a fact more than playfully referenced in one "scene" in the comic where the Ultimates were playing "Cast that movie" with themselves. When the subject of Nick Fury came up he said words to the effect of "No contest, Sam Jackson". Apparently this was done with his personal blessing, even going as far as having a giant piece of art based on the character hanging in his home (his wife bought it for him).

Here, have a picture, on me:

*BONUS* And now a shot of David Hasslehoff as the original Nick Fury!:

FAN-tastic!
