Childhood Memories

I was just wondering what peoples favorite childhood books were and why. Um mine was "A Home For Sally". My sister got it when she was like three and I read it when I was four. It's a book about a homeless dog who finds a home with these two kids and I think it's my favorite because it was the first book I ever read on my own. Another would be "The Ear The Eye And The Arm". I like that one because it was a futuristic Africa and that's just frickin awesome.

Wow, I read so much its kind of hard to choose... For the sake of this thread I'll say "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" by Clive Staples Lewis. It was just big. There was this whole other world right on the far end of this ordinary object and it was full of all these different creatures. I hadn't read the "Lord of the Rings" books (still haven't;p) so something on this sort of scale (and as a whole with the "Chronicles of Narnia") and with the kind of continuity it had was just something I don't think I'd run into before I read this in early elementary. I liked it so much that when my little brother started to talk and understand I read this book to him to get him interested and let him read the rest of it (and another book from the series) on his own.

Another favorite was a illustrated guide to chess with all the pieces personified I found in the 3rd grade. That was fun:P

I loved the Great Mouse Detective. I just read a couple of books as a kid, and this one worked for book reports until the 8th grade... god I love LAUSD.

The only book that I can remember happens to be the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Most other books I read I remember only in title.

I liked the Lord of the Rings due to the characters, the action, and the drama in the books.

My FAVORITE was Where the Wild Things Are which is in production as a movie, written and directed by Spike Jonze.

I really enjoyed books written by Bill Pete whose works include The Whingdingdilly, Chester the Worldly Pig, and Cowardly Clyde.

I also really liked The Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl. This book is in pre-production and I'm really happy to see Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Rushmore) at the helm.

Roald Dahl was always a interesting read. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was fun and quirky, but once we got to the sequal "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" that things went to the next level. What with its orbital hotels, a infestation of vermicious knids, a dottering American President who took orders from his Nanny among other things. The whole thing also became a bit of a comentary, but some would say so was the first book.
