Perhaps "Vs." is wrong, but I wanted to point out that makes me somewhat saddened and even a bit ashamed about us (the U.S.) as a country
My mom, a legal resident for decades now, is a nice old lady with a 1st grader education in Mexico, limited English, and a minimum wage slave.
In just 2 weeks worth of prep for her citizenship test, she now accurately knows more about America than most people I've met that has graduated from high school. My rather bright and successful sister was amazed at how much more my mother knew than she did. _________________ "Addiction can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed."

Natural born as in people who are born in the US or people that adopt the US culture? Very different in scale if you ask me. I could give a rats ass if you were born here or not, if you live here than why the hell do we deny you citizenship? Makes no sense, but I've never been good with the economic side of things. Anyone care to elaborate a bit more on the topic? I sure as hell don't know anything about most immigration policies since they keep changing them to confuse people. _________________ Anyone who says money can't buy happiness doesn't have enough money.

Every year the U.S. allows a set amount of people from each country to become Citizens based on various social, economic, and political variables. As to the conditions to be allowed into the U.S., the person applying needs to know "basic" American history and current political facts (who's the president, vice president, etc), have proof of employment, have no criminal background (a few misdemeanors are okay), and speak English, although that can be waived if you've been a legal resident for at least 15 years. _________________ "Addiction can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed."

Maybe its just me being on the east coast, but i dont see why we can't let everyone roam from place to place. Why do we need immigration laws? if it gets to crowded and there are no jobs, wont the immigrants just stop coming? _________________ ~jynx~

It's the ages old Western Civilization need to establish land rights. If you want free roaming in America you have to go back to when "Americans" lived in teepee's and hunted the sacred buffalo. Flag carrying Europeans came over here and demanded (in true European fashion) that all others recognize said flags or else. Native Americans asked, "What's a flag?" and were either shot for their ignorance or diseased out of existence.
To be fair, our Asian counterparts (Mongol and Japanese empires specifically) would have done the exact same thing had they arrived here first.
That's why seeing the Cleveland Indians's name and logo ticks me off. Also the Atlanta Braves and their stupid war chant. The two worst ones though come from football: Florida State Seminoles and Washington Redskins. Every half-time show at a Florida State game features some idiot decked out in replica Seminole sacred headdress prancing about on the field in some mock attempt at an "Indian" ritual dance. And Redskins? Really? What if the NFL introduced a new team called the LA Negroes? And their mascot was some White man in blackface doing a half-time rendition of My Mammy? How long would that last?
I'm gonna stop now. I know this is the rants section, but I could go on forever about this. _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

Agreed but my biggest pet peeve as of late (in regards to racism) is this idea of reverse racism. Because I'm white that means that i can be pushed around and discriminated against, but if I call anyone out on it I'm racist. Irish people...we were treated horribly too, especially by the English (No offense Aran), maybe not quite as bad, but racism is racism. _________________ ~jynx~

Totally. The Irish were often considered sub-human both here and in Britain.
I find it disturbing that any idiot on television can say "cracker" a hundred billion times and not get a finger lifted against them, but say "nigger" and all of a sudden you've committed something worse than murder. This is why I'm a theist and not a humanist. We must have absolute standards if we are to progress beyond our primordial ooze ancestry. _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

I actually think instead of getting rid of the teams that are offensive to Native Americans we should create or rename teams so that they are offensive to everyone.
Los Angeles needs a football team and I have maintained for a while that it should be the Los Angeles Vatos and their mascot should be a SD/Chibi mexican gang member with big foam guns. We have the Washington Redskins, how about the Louisana Rednecks, or the Carolina Crackers or the Upper Westchester W.A.S.P.s. I would totally go see a game between the Brooklyn Wops and the Forrest Park Heebs. How about the San Deigo Wetbacks vs, The San Francisco Flames? I mean, Notre Dame has the Fighting Irish and you don't hear the Irish complaining about being portrayed as angry drunken Leprechauns. If you asked they'd probably say "Fook, yeah, We'll fight'cha." _________________ Mercy is the mark of a great man.

Notre Dame was founded by Irish Catholics so I have no problem with whatever they want to call themselves. Your suggestion of offending everybody would only work in a perfect world where no one is underrepresented. Who stands up for the Seminole nation when something they hold sacred is being grossly exploited so a bunch of fratboys can "tail it up, bro." They didn't ask for this.
The only reason why I brought up the Native American issue is because we were talking about immigration law and letting people roam free, as it were. And it goes right back to what I was talking about earlier: land rights. We are the inheritors (like it or not) of our European forefathers. I mean, are we going to just give it all back? No way that's going to happen. History has shown that our guns and our germs were stronger - there's no going back. But we can be gracious conquerors. In fact, we need to be. Our country must live up to a higher standard. It is our legacy, our claim to greatness. Democratic ideals are only as strong as the people who practice them, and lately we haven't been practicing a whole lot. _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

Wait we live in a democracy? I thought we gave that up ages ago. Fancy that.
Dan- and that is why I love south park and think that no one should be offended by it because Park and Stone are the only people i know that dont discriminate in some manner. _________________ ~jynx~

Man, you are way too young to be this cynical already. I don't know about you, but I haven't given up on my democracy. Call me a slow learner - a dinosaur who doesn't know that he's supposed to be extinct - but "they" can have my democracy when they rip it from my cold, lifeless hands. I will not give up, I will not "go gentle into that good night," and T.S. Eliot be damned, I refuse to believe that the world will end with a whimper! _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

No worries, I couldn't care less to be honest. Seeing as I'm not English and all that. In fact, us Welsh people (and our Scottich friends) are about as close to Irish as its possible to be. And we join in with any hating of the English whenever we get the opportunity.

You must encourage cynicism! It makes the world a more interesting place, especially when you get 16 year old kids from a country named after a large sea creature talking about why he thinks the Sept. 11th attacks were staged. (that's a story for another thread. I only said that as an example.) _________________ Blake: "Tally ho, chocks away old chap"

And that's what happens when someone (me) makes assumptions. They tend to be wrong.
Aranthos = Welsh.
Keep in mind that I am fairly ignorant about your part of the world, Aran, so I will bungle about here and there if/when I make a referrence _________________ "Addiction can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed."
