I have to admit that I have not been at true gammer for many years now
I'm now the kind of gamer that pulls out a game that's a few months to a year old, dusts it off, and enjoys the hell outta it. World of Warcraft was my last charade to "true gammer" but I stopped playing almost 2 months ago.
In any case, a few not so new games I've just recently played that I enjoyed:
Star Fox Assault:
If any of you remember one of the first strips I drew for The Adventures of Dave the Direman with David Yun (www.direman.com), you'll remember that it poked fun and was somewhat upset with the fact that the game "forces" a lot of ground action. Truth be told, not only did I not mind it, I loved it. I LIKED the fact that I was playing Fox McCloud, a Mercenary that is an awesome pilot, but also a skilled commando. That's just my take.
Def Jam - Fight for New York:
A great game by any measure and most gamers agree. There's just something so damn satisfying about watching a not-quite-accurate rendition of yourself (although I was very surprised that my outfit was dead on to my actual dress style) taking someone's head and ramming it head first into a concrete wall with a meaty crunch.
Civilization IV:
I've always loved God Games. My pal Trebuchet got me a copy of this great game for my b-day. Unfortunately I put it away after I played through a few games and realized I was spending a good chunk of my daylight on it. I might dust it off later again though.
Any such games that you've recently taken out of storage, or just purchased and want to praise or trash?
P.S. The Angry Video Game Nerd (www.screwattack.com) has taken trashing games while being genuinely informative to a level that can only be described as being an art form.

Here's a list of games I loved (and still love) to play:
Romance of the Three Kingdoms II
-hardcore enthusiasts say that "I" was the best but, come on, it was monochromatic and hardly had any of the production value of "II"
X-COM
-the second game to ever break me
Civ I-IV
-this series to me is like what Johnny Walker in all of its various colors is to an alcoholic
Jagged Alliance 2
-the last great squad-based, turn-based strategy game I've played (it actually weened me off of X-COM with its great gameplay innovations)
In this age of 10 million dollar production budgets I'm glad that some games will never go away. _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

I never spent enough time to understand Romance of the Three Kingdoms (any of them). They seemed like fun but my attention span always forced me to go "meh" after like five minutes.
And yeah, X-Com broke me too. I played that game so much that my main character had all her stats were maxed. No one bothered to tell me that to beat it I had to take some alien leaders in alive to find out that their base is on mars. God I loved and hated that game.
So, who's up for some Smash Brothers? |

The real joy of playing Romance of the Three Kingdoms (RTK) is getting into the mythology of it all. Just imagine taking some of the most legendary heroes in history, putting them in a game that gives them stats, and being able to recruit them and send them into battle at the head of thousands of your soldiers! Each character in that game, from the lowest to the highest, had a back story and impact on the turn of actual events that brought about the eventual fall of the 2nd Han Dynasty. It's truly a romantic tale of brothers in arms, political intrigue, the clash of titans on the battle field, tragic loyalty and betrayal. _________________ Conan! What is best in life?

I feel so sheltered! Any games that has been talked about I have never heard of in my life! Either I am confined to a bubble where only fames like final fantasy, virtua fighter, and KH exist or I'm just really that young... _________________ IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!!!!! |

Does buying the reissues of Final Fantasy IV and VI for the GBA count, Dave? I <3 those FFs. ^^
At some point I will need to finish Kingdom Hearts 2. And I need to get Jon to finish Tales of Symphonia when he comes back. |

I just can't seem to get into the 8-bit to 64-bit stuff anymore. Dunno why, there's quite a few that I've wanted to play; I just can't seem to actually sit down and play through them though. _________________ Anyone who says money can't buy happiness doesn't have enough money. |

Wait, what? Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I must have missed this one.
I have no clue what the question was :p
Um... Yes?

As for not being able to get into older games, it all depends on the presentation for me. |

So I made the mistake of showing Joel what he missed by not playing Symphony of the Night.
He said: "I could get to like this, and the music kicks ass".
I said: "can't talk, playing".
Yeah, now I have to finish the game again. |

If you've got some time to try and play them and the inclination to download Steam from Valvle you too could play some of yesteryears best games! For a Price!
X-Com? $5 (Currently on sale for $2.45). Deus Ex? $10. Jagged Alliance 2? The gold pack (includes expansion) $20.
I prefer to go through Amazon and get the actual discs, but seriously. If you can't find them or you don't have the time to go looking around, paying a few bucks and getting the ability to download the games you purchased onto any computer you have your account running from is a good deal. And since it works like the Xbox Live gamer tag, you can uninstall and re-install whenever you want since its tied to the account rather than a particular machine. _________________ <(@_@<), <(@_@)>, (>@_@)>, <(@_@)>, <(@_~)>, <(@_@)>, <(@_@<) |

Some games that I'd recommend digging up and playing if you never done so:
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Arguably the best 2D Zelda game (some would say ever).
Mega Man X 1-3 Great platform action gaming with everything that made Mega Man games GOOD.
Final Fantasy 3 (6 in Japan) THE best Final Fantasy. Ever. Large cast of fully developed characters, great music, and one of the most memorable whack-jobs of a villain to grace the video gaming community.
Conkers Bad Fur Day Make SURE you play the N64 version. The remake blows. The fight against The Great Mighty Poo alone made this game worth it. _________________ "Addiction can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed."
